The letter O provides us with several names of linguistic and historical interest. In this post, we spotlight two particularly rich entries: the male personal name Ožbalt (Osvald) and the family name Oven.

The Surname Oven – From Noble Animal to Stubbornness

The surname Oven is relatively common in central Slovenia. It originally emerged as a nickname derived from the animal name oven (ram). The first bearers of this surname likely earned it based on positive attributes associated with rams—such as strength, leadership, or endurance.

Over time, however, a different quality became proverbial. In Slovene, the expression “trmast kot oven” (“as stubborn as a ram”) has become widespread. This likely originates from observing the ram’s persistent and combative nature, especially during rutting season or in confrontational behavior—traits that have come to symbolize stubbornness and defiance.

The Name Ožbalt / Oswald – A Legacy of Medieval Devotion

One of the most prominent male names found in 16th-century records is Ožbalt, a Slovene variant of the German name Oswald. The name was especially popular in the Carinthian region and has deep historical roots. It was first documented on Slovenian territory as early as 860 AD, in the Latin form Oswaldus, referring to a regional bishop among the Slovenians.

The veneration of Saint Oswald contributed significantly to the name’s popularity. In Slovenia, 22 churches are dedicated to St. Ožbalt. Several places were named after him as well: Ožbolt, Šentožbolt, and Sv. Ožbalt. Saint Ožbalt was traditionally considered a protector against sea dangers, and log drivers (splavars) in the Savinja Valley also honored him as their patron saint.
