Luka: A Timeless Name in Slovenia, from the 16th Century to the Present
The name Luka has a long and rich history in Slovenia. It is already mentioned in the Cividale Gospel (9th–10th century) as the name of a pilgrim. In the Tolmin land register from 1377, a farmer named Lukas is recorded in Jesenice.
In the 16th century, the name appears frequently in various documents, often also in the form Lukež. In the manorial records of the Stična Abbey from the 16th century, Luka is mentioned as many as 161 times, and the variant Lukež 27 times.
In the 20th century, the name Luka experienced a significant rise in popularity. By 1940, it was still relatively rare, with only 34 newborns registered with the name Luka. In the 1960s, the number grew to nearly 100, in the 1970s to almost 800, and by the 1980s to over 2,300. In the first decade of the new millennium, more than 3,000 boys were named Luka, showing the remarkable growth in the name’s popularity.
