Vanished Surnames: Why Many No Longer Exist Today

Surnames beginning with the letter K—along with those starting with P—are among the most common in Slovenia. This pattern is clearly reflected in the 16th-century lists of serfs and their dues to the Cistercian Abbey of Stična. Interestingly, a significant number of these surnames from that period have not survived to the present day.

Among the K surnames that have since disappeared are Kalic, Kaporič, Kaše, Kaštunik, Kejer, Koluder, Komilanič, Košvejc, Križecer, and Kušren, to name just a few.

The main reason a surname disappears is often due to a break in its transmission within a family, typically caused by a lack of male descendants. This tends to affect surnames that were already rare and unique. However, it’s also important to remember that in the 16th century, surnames were still in the process of becoming established. In some cases, a male descendant might not have inherited his father’s surname at all, but instead adopted—or was given—a completely different one. This was especially common with so-called humorous or even vulgar surnames.
