When Janko Was Still Janko: Slovenian Names Before Germanization

The 16th-century manorial records from the Cistercian Abbey of Stična provide a valuable glimpse into the authentic use of Slovenian personal names. At that time, scribes were not yet instructed to Germanize names, allowing many Slovenian forms to be recorded as they were spoken. For example, both Janez and Janko appear in these records—variants that later disappeared under the standardized German form Johann.

The same applies to the name Jure, which appears in diverse forms such as Jure, Jurij, Jurko, and Juršo. In later centuries, these nuances were lost in parish registers that adopted only Georg or Georgius (Latin form).

Interestingly, the only female name starting with J is Jera, reflecting the continued local use of forms like Jera, Jerica, and Jerka instead of the German Gertrud. These records thus preserve a uniquely Slovenian naming landscape before it was altered by linguistic and administrative shifts.
