A Statistical Look at Surnames: The Letter H
In this blog post, we explore surnames beginning with the letter H in the 16th-century Stična manorial records. The list includes 14 surnames, five of which have not survived to the present day: Harlan, Hegler, Herdl, Hlabše, and Hudelj. The remaining surnames are still in use, carried by many Slovenians today.

Among H surnames, the most common is Hribar, which ranked 19th in Slovenia in 2024, with slightly over 3,000 people carrying the name. It is followed by Hočevar, which ranks 24th with 2,746 individuals. Further down the list, Hafner—the German equivalent of the Slovenian surname Lončar (meaning “potter”)—ranks 172nd, with just under 1,000 people. The other H surnames are much rarer:
